Anthropic on August 27 opened a limited, application-only research preview of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new open specification for AI agents to safely operate physical equipment in scientific research and advanced manufacturing. CNBC first reported the announcement. Anthropic developed MHS in partnership with the HHMI Janelia Research Campus and provided early access to a handful of partners including Genentech, Carnegie Mellon University, quantum computing firm QuEra, Universal Robots, Amazon Web Services, Doosan Robotics, Danaher, and Hugging Face.

MHS is designed to work with any device that has a programmable interface, using MCP as one of three interchangeable control mechanisms alongside CLI and code files. The research preview covers microscopes, liquid handlers, cameras, plate readers, robotic arms, and laser-control equipment. The standard is model-agnostic, it works with Claude, OpenAI models, or open-source agents, and Anthropic plans to open-source it after the preview phase, replicating the trajectory MCP followed after its 2024 introduction. The move extends Anthropic's infrastructure ambitions beyond software. The company recently hired hardware executive Caitlin Kalinowski, formerly of OpenAI, Meta, and Apple, and is assembling a silicon team to design custom chips.
